SF Community Support

We are a San Francisco-based grassroots effort coordinating safe volunteer opportunities to meet pressing needs in our neighborhoods.

We support neighbors in need with grocery shopping, food bank pickups, medicine delivery, technology coaching, pet walking, errands and other needs. Because we’re #strongertogether.

How We Work

We help identify and match support needs in San Francisco.

For support requests: You (or a trusted friend/family member), can fill out our request form, or contact us via the phone number/email below. We will work to match you with a volunteer in your area within 24 hours of your request.

For volunteers: Once you sign up, you become part of our volunteer community. We will reach out to you when requests near you come in and equip you with the proper health and safety guidelines. We also have a Slack and Facebook Group in which we will share volunteering opportunities and in which you can exchange with other volunteers.

Together, we will take collective action to address needs in our neighborhoods during this challenging time, and strengthen our communities in the process.

We are a collective grassroots effort coordinating safe volunteer opportunities to meet the pressing needs in our neighborhoods.
Inspired by all the generosity and support in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, our community of 500+ volunteers has come together with an earnest desire to help one another in this time of crisis.

Some Stories

“Having lived in 4 different countries, I understand how hard it can be to live in a city with little to know orientation and direct connections in the area that can help you…the power of community is a phenomenal force that can help people that are struggling and create actual change. And currently, it is more important than ever to create this change and to ensure that we live in a world and community we are proud of.” — Marcel

“Having many family members and friends working in the healthcare system, I hoped to find another way to help our community through this difficult time.” — Nitasha

“Being quarantined in my house I really felt useless and wanted to find a way to help my community… I wanted to do something for people like my grandparents who are at risk but still need to buy groceries, pick up prescriptions, etc.” — Marie

“When the COVID-19 hit our community, I wanted to help out anyway I could, especially high-risk community members with existing medical conditions like myself who put themselves (or others) at risk every time they go out.” — Toni

Come join us! Opportunities to help include:

Any other talents and gifts you bring!

Volunteer Protocol

As a volunteer, I agree to:

Assume good will. We trust that people asking for support truly need support, and it is not our place to assume need. Many people may need an extra hand right now, and needs may look different for different individuals and families, and may evolve over time.

Fulfill requests if I claim them. If I cannot fulfill a request that I claimed, I will notify the SF Community Support team immediately so a replacement can be found. I will follow up with the SF Community Support team to let them know my task has been completed.

Only sign up to volunteer for in-person tasks if I am healthy. You cannot volunteer for in-person tasks if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, have a high-risk profession (transit worker, healthcare worker, etc.), have traveled out of the country in the past 14 days, and/or are a high-risk/vulnerable person to infection.

Follow health and safety guidelines, such as wearing a mask, to protect my own health and that of others when I complete a task.

Hygiene is of the utmost importance if you are delivering and interacting with people at risk or in need:

Please follow all directions provided by the CDC to mitigate community spread. These are particularly high risk individuals. Please practice the best hygiene possible and limit physical contact. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/prevention.html

Try to deliver the items by leaving them outside their house or at the designate location

Avoid touching doorbells with skin contact. Call if possible

DO NOT ENTER home even if invited in EXCEPT in cases the homebound person is unable to bring heavier items in. In such cases please keep a distance of at least 6ft and DO NOT TOUCH anything in the house.

Avoid public transport if possible

Try Off Peak Hours for shopping

Avoid face to face exchanges as much as possible

If you can please wipe all the supplies with isopropyl alcohol or whatever you have at your disposal

Wear Cloth Masks when shopping and outside

Wash your hands before picking up supplies and immediately after delivery

When purchasing for multiple people, please separate the receipts and give the respective receipt to the Match.

If there is a problem with the payment, please reach out to us at hello@sfcommunitysupport.com.

If at any time during your volunteering services, you find out you have been in contact with or are living with someone who has been diagnosed as COVID19 positive, please inform us immediately.

Things to discuss with your match:

Time

Items

Payment method: Please give the receipt of goods to the match

Delivery method : We suggest leaving it at the designated location. Please avoid contact.

Thank you again for your service!

This match program is being organized by private citizens for the benefit of those in our community. By completing the sign up form to be matched you agree that you accept all risk and responsibility and further hold any facilitator associated with SF Community Support harmless. OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Distribute Flyers

Here you can find some black and white flyers, which are small and super easy to print! If you could distribute them in your neighborhood or potentially leave them at a store when you go out, you would be doing amazing work!! This way, we can reach people in need, in your very own neighborhood. Thanks so much for your support! Don’t forget to check back later this week if you do not get a match today!

Make DIY Masks

Learn how to make DIY masks by the CDC here. We are focusing on sending them to organizations that work with supplying the homeless community. Currently, we are seeing the biggest propagation of transmission in these settings. We have reached out to Coalition on Homelessness and they will be happy to take any mask donations!

You can drop them off M-T 10am - 3pm, or mail them to this address: 280 Turk St, San Francisco CA, 94102

Standards of Engagement

SF Community Support’s Standards of Engagement are comprised of our Group Agreements and our Anti-Harassment Policy. All members of our community, including volunteers and individuals requesting support, must agree to these standards of engagement before participating in our network. We value you all as a part of the SF Community Support family, and hope that by communicating these expectations widely we can all enjoy a comfortable and respectful environment.

If you have any questions or feedback related to these guidelines, please reach out to the team at hello@sfcommunitysupport.org.

Group Agreements
As organizers, we agree to:

Ensure that the experiences between volunteers and individuals seeking support are positive for both parties, and

Provide an environment where everyone in the SF Community Support network is free from discrimination or harassment. Read more about our Anti-Harassment Policy below.

We invite all members of our SF Community Support network to contribute to creating an inclusive, respectful, friendly, empowering, and supportive culture. As a member in the SF Community Support network, I agree to the follow values:

As a volunteer, I agree to:

Assume good will. We trust that people asking for support truly need support, and it is not our place to assume need. Many people may need an extra hand right now, and needs may look different for different individuals and families, and may evolve over time.

Before completing any in-person task, you must review the health and safety guidelines.

Follow health and safety guidelines, such as wearing a mask, to protect my own health and that of others when I complete a task.

Fulfill requests if I claim them. If I cannot fulfill a request that I claimed, I will notify the SF Community Support team immediately so a replacement can be found. I will follow up with the SF Community Support team to let them know my task has been completed.

As someone requesting support, I agree to:

Only request support for services that SF Community Support volunteers can provide. This includes: grocery delivery, prescription pickup, and other errands; dog walking and pet care; 1:1 phone calls and support check-ins; and tech support, such as help with delivery apps and video conferencing.

SF Community Support cannot provide long-term, large-scale financial support, such as rent payments or other large expenses.

Only request support if I live in San Francisco.

Understand that needs are prioritized. In times of high demand, grocery runs and prescriptions will take precedence over less time-sensitive requests.

Try to batch my requests, if possible. I will try to send no more than 1 request per week. We want to have volunteers going out as little as possible, and the SF Community Support volunteer process does not accommodate unreasonably frequent requests. I understand that if I make an excessive amount of requests, my requests may not be met within a reasonable time and I may be placed on hold from making requests.

Anti-Harassment Policy
Full Anti-Harassment Policy

We do not tolerate harassment of any individual or group who engages with our platform, including volunteers or requesters of support, in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate in any activity related to SF Community Support. Any individual who violates these rules may be expelled from the SF Community Support network and platform, at the discretion of the organizers.

Offensive verbal or written comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, or age

Sexual imagery and language in SF Community Support’s online channels and email; deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording of any SF Community Support community member

Inappropriate physical contact; unwelcome sexual attention; unwarranted exclusion; and patronizing language or action

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the SF Community Support team at hello@sfcommunitysupport.org. We are hopeful that by providing these guidelines we are establishing a community that jointly adheres to these values and can provide an environment that is welcoming to all.
